Driving in the fog is far from an enjoyable experience. Decreased visibility has a tendency to put us on edge a little bit, for good reason. If driving when foggy is unavoidable, here are some tips to ensure you make it to your destination safely.
Slow Down
First and foremost, slow down. Due to decreased visibility, obstacles, animals, and other hazardous obstacles will be harder to see until a closer distance. Driving at a slower speed will give you more time to stop or navigate around them.
Utilize Your Low Beam Headlights
Half of vehicle safety is making sure that you’re visible to other drivers on the road. Using your low-beam headlights will turn on your tail lights as well, helping others from both directions spot you easier.
Avoid High-Beams
While it may seem counterintuitive to not use your high-beams, they will actually be a detriment to your field of vision. When using your brights, they can reflect off of the fog, create glare, and put you at increased risk.
Do Not Tailgate
Leaving plenty of room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you can make a world of difference if sudden or unexpected stops are required.
Utilize Your Hazard Lights
In extremely dense fog, the safest option is always to pull into a safe location and wait for it to subside. However, we understand that sometimes this is not feasible. If driving is absolutely necessary, turning on your hazard lights can provide an extra layer of protection and notification to other drivers around you.
