How much does it cost to replace a windshield? It depends far more on what you drive than on where you live. To find out how much, we analyzed real windshield replacement pricing across 528 vehicles from 41 manufacturers in the Auto Glass Estimator database. The average across all of them lands at about $363 — but the range is enormous, from economy cars under $250 to luxury and EV models well over $700. Here’s what the data shows.

Why Windshield Costs Vary So Much

The gap between a $220 windshield and a $750 one comes down to a few factors:

ADAS technology. Newer vehicles mount cameras and sensors on the windshield for lane-keeping, automatic braking, and adaptive cruise. That glass is more complex, and it has to be recalibrated after installation — see what ADAS recalibration costs. This is the single biggest driver of the range.

OEM vs. aftermarket glass. Luxury and EV models often require original-equipment glass to preserve features and fit, which costs more than aftermarket alternatives.

Size, shape, and features. Large SUV and truck windshields, heated glass, acoustic laminates, rain sensors, and heads-up displays all add cost.

Does Where You Live Change the Cost?

Location plays a smaller role than most people expect. The glass and calibration are the same in Vermont as in California; what varies by region is mostly labor rates and local market competition, which move the final price by a modest amount rather than the hundreds of dollars that vehicle type does.

Where your state really matters is what you pay out of pocket, not the sticker price. A handful of states require insurers to waive your glass deductible entirely — so an identical windshield can cost you $0 in one state and your full deductible in another. See our guides to states with zero deductible for comprehensive glass claims and whether insurance covers windshield replacement, or check your vehicle’s typical cost by make and model.

Methodology

Figures reflect average windshield replacement pricing for 528 vehicles across 41 manufacturers in the Auto Glass Estimator database, averaged across available model years for each vehicle. Brand averages include manufacturers with at least three priced models; model rankings include vehicles with at least five years of pricing data for stability. Prices reflect the glass and typical installation and can vary by trim, model year, ADAS calibration needs, and OEM vs. aftermarket glass.
